Lenape Solar Partners with Charitable Agency to Provide Community Help
January, 2012  -  Showing an ongoing commitment to community by ‘giving back,’ Sunbury-based Lenape Solar recently partnered with Central Susquehanna Opportunities of Shamokin (CSO) to help renovate a newly-acquired ‘bridge housing’ unit and to provide much-needed assistance to beleaguered area residents following September’s devastating flooding and the ensuing cleanup and rebuilding … hard work which continues to this day.

Says Gale Zalar of Central Susquehanna Opportunities, “We are so grateful to Lenape Solar for their dedication to helping our communities rebuild and achieve self-sufficiency after the flooding. It’s been just wonderful, and we’ve received nothing but glowing remarks from the many homeowners whom we’ve, thankfully, been able to help.”
To date, the Lenape Solar crew has assisted CSO in the cleanup and initial renovation of 10 area homes, performing such unenviable tasks as mold removal and structural damage demolition … tearing out waterlogged or sewage-coated carpeting, flooring or walls … after which they perform the needed repairs such as sealing of basements or rooms and various carpentry work.

“And the work goes on …” according to Zalar. “Many people aren’t aware of the ongoing problems after the flooding. It’s been such a wet year and the ground is over-saturated. There’s nowhere left for the waters to go and re-flooding occurs regularly … and we continue to hear from residents that just can’t cope with all of the damage and costs on their own. Our area will be reeling from the effects of the flood and the re-flooding for a long time to come.”The assistance that CSO is able to offer is made possible primarily by donations, all of which go directly back to the community … but it is their partnership with Lenape Solar and other labor volunteers that creates a solution that isn’t dependent upon diminishing (or often non-existent) federal or state assistance. This is community action at its core … neighbors helping neighbors … and it works. When Lenape Solar’s crew is in between solar installation projects, the company’s project manager, Chris Knyrim (of Dewart, PA), contacts the staff at CSO to see if help is needed (which is almost always the case) and Lenape Solar then donates their labor and CSO purchases or procures the needed materials through community donation.
Unlike many contractors or businesses that typically endure cold season ‘downtime’ and unavoidable laborer layoffs, Lenape Solar’s dedication to their valued staff and toward exemplary company management includes provisionary (if not visionary) budgeting, which allows them to keep their entire staff happily working throughout any given slow period. During these times (though not only), Lenape Solar donates labor and services to regional organizations, agencies or residents in need … and it’s a particular source of pride to the local solar company.
According to Tonya Ditty, president of Lenape Solar, “Our crew is just outstanding, and they love their work … and to stay working … especially when they know they’re making a difference in their own communities and helping their neighbors.”Lenape’s vice-president Justin Charles adds, “We love having these kinds of opportunities and being fortunate in our ability to lend a hand when needed. We’re all neighbors, in a sense, and supporting each other in whatever ways we can really matters.”In addition to the community work with flood victims, Lenape Solar is also working with CSO on the renovation of a newly-acquired home which will be utilized for ‘bridge housing,’ offering a temporary home to persons in transition or those whom qualify for subsidized housing but have yet to find it.

     Central Susquehanna Opportunities, Inc.
is a regional, private, non-profit, community-based, charitable organization that is dedicated to helping people make positive changes in their lives and assisting their communities to grow. CSO empowers the communities and citizens of the region to develop and maintain self-sufficiency by providing employment-related and other supportive services, and by partnering with agencies & companies, such as Lenape Solar, with similar missions in order to fill the gaps in services that are needed to address poverty at the local level. CSO’s goal is to continually improve social, educational and economic environments, which allow for optimum growth for our region and the elimination of poverty. The organization reaches out to all citizens of the region, including children, unemployed, underemployed, displaced workers and low-income peoples, addressing their multiple needs through a comprehensive community action approach. Lenape Hosts On-Site Learning Experience for Eager Triangle Tech Students

"Students Illuminated During Solar Energy Installation Field Trip"
September, 2011 - With the demand and interest in solar energy becoming greater, and in recognizing the gap between the fast growth of the solar industry and the skill sets needed for working in this field, the staff at Triangle Tech’s Sunbury campus set out to ‘enlighten’ their students in the Maintenance Electricity & Construction Technology program with a special on-site presentation by Lenape Solar at one of their recent solar power systems installations.
The 39 students, along with Triangle Tech Assistant Director Tom Fry and instructors David Shipe, Angela Confer, Jason Schiccatano and Donald Peters, visited the site of a large, residential solar power installation in rural Sunbury, where they were afforded an in-depth presentation on solar energy systems and technology by Justin Charles, Executive Vice-President of Lenape Solar, who installed the custom-designed, state-of-the-art system.
The system, a decidedly striking 112-feet-long array of solar photovoltaic panels (which produce electricity), immediately impressed the Triangle Tech students & staff and found them curiously inspecting the system and asking questions before the presentation even began. “This is very cool” was a comment echoed throughout the group.
Charles began what would prove to be a highly educational and well-received presentation with some light-hearted trivia questions about solar energy (even tossing candy to the those with correct, or close-to-correct, answers), which found many amazed upon learning that solar energy technology dates back to the 1800s. The ‘photovoltaic effect’ (the creation of electricity in a material upon its exposure to sunlight) was first discovered in 1839, and later in that century (1877), the first solar cell was built. Perhaps the most impressive solar fact ‘brought to light’ is that the sun, in just 40 minutes, releases the amount of energy consumed by the entire population of the planet over a full year.
The presentation went on to explain the science behind solar energy generation, the technologies employed and the two types of solar energy systems that Lenape Solar installs to the benefit of a homeowner, business or industry. The first, and the type of system installed at the residence the students visited, is a photovoltaic system, which utilizes a series of panels to convert solar energy to electricity. The second type of system is a solar thermal system, which uses the sun’s energy to heat water, which can then be used for not only domestic hot water, but for radiant heating and even pool or spa heating.
Also discussed were such topics as installation costs, energy savings, return on investment in a solar energy system and the many incentives, rebates and programs currently available to both homeowners and businesses. Lenape Solar is recognized as the regional experts in up-to-the-minute federal, state and local renewable energy programs, allowing them to minimize their customers’ investment costs while maximizing their return & savings. Lenape Solar also proudly supports the “Buy American” initiative by offering only premier system components from Buy American qualified manufacturers in their installations.
According to Tom Fry, Assistant Director at Triangle Tech-Sunbury, “It was a pleasure to see the interaction between Justin [Charles] and the students as he masterfully illuminated them with the state-of-the-art workings of the solar energy system installed by Lenape Solar. I personally found the presentation very interesting and believe many of the students gained a new appreciation for green energy technologies, as I did. I know that a few are contemplating possible career opportunities in the burgeoning field of renewable energies.”
One of the important goals at Triangle Tech is not only to properly prepare their students to enter the workforce with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed, but to assist them with job placement and ongoing career advisement. Thus, it was with notable excitement the students learned that one of Lenape Solar’s lead installers, Ryan Hunt of Sunbury, is a graduate of Triangle Tech.
Also on hand at this special learning opportunity were Carol Yagle and Randal Hollenbach of PA CareerLink, who listened with great interest and appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the fast-growing solar industry and the opportunities for employment that it will continue to offer.
Following Mr. Charles’ applauded presentation, all of the representatives from Triangle Tech, PA CareerLink and Lenape Solar discussed their mutual excitement at the discovery of a shared vision toward education, environmental responsibility and supporting local business, and they are looking forward to working together again in the future.

Lenape Solar Helps Three Valley Businesses Obtain Substantial Grants
July, 2011 - Sunbury-based Lenape Solar, LLC, has helped three valley businesses receive substantial federal grants to offset their recent solar energy system installations.
Steininger’s Laundromat of Selinsgrove, Pallas Hills Alpaca Farm in Mt. Pleasant Mills, and All Points Land Survey, Middleburg, were the recipients of the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grants, which were written & submitted by Lenape Solar on behalf of their customers, with whom Lenape Solar worked very closely to design a project that would qualify for the grants. “Fantastic news!” exclaimed Chuck Steininger, owner of Steininger’s Laundromat.
Specifically created to offset the cost of projects t
hat reduce the energy consumption of small businesses in rural America, the REAP grants helped the three area businesses
realize a 25% offset in their solar energy system installation costs.  When coupled with the existing federal and state incentives & rebates available to interested customers for solar energy projects, businesses can receive huge reductions in their total system installation costs, and in this particular case, the cost reductions for the REAP Grant recipient businesses will consequently afford them a complete return on their system investment in just two years.

“We are all very happy for our customers, and thrilled that we could help them minimize their system investment costs, which, in turn, is going to save them an incredible amount of money on their utilities,” says Lenape Solar President Tonya Ditty.  She adds, “Although the funding period for this year has just come to a close, we are very eager to begin working on the next round of grant applications for both our current and future customers.  There’s a tremendous amount of work involved in preparing & submitting such grant proposals and custom-designing qualifying solar projects, but it’s well worth the effort on our part, because helping our customers save money while protecting our environment is the most important thing to us.  This time around, we submitted three proposals and all three were funded ... and we couldn’t be happier.”

Lenape Solar Relocates Offices To Sunbury & Appoints New President
June, 2011 – Lenape Solar™, LLC, the area’s fastest-growing solar energy systems company, has relocated their offices to downtown Sunbury at 140 South Second Street, and concurrently, has appointed Tonya Ditty, a Sunbury native, as president of the company.
Having quickly outgrown their previous facilities in nearby Lewisburg, the company spent several months searching for an appropriate location to base their operations. Now with over a dozen employees, most of who reside in the Sunbury area, the Second Street location offered both the space needed and greater convenience to the company’s highly valued staff. Lenape Solar™ is now proud to call Sunbury and their
new downtown office space “home.”
“It was important to us that our new location be convenient for our staff and crew, especially since most of them have families and their previous commute added an extra hour to their work day. When we found the space on Second Street, we knew it would suit the company’s needs perfectly and make our staff much happier,” according to Lenape Solar’s new president, Tonya Ditty.
A native of Sunbury and daughter of the late Larry Ditty (co-owner of Brush Industries, Inc.), Ms. Ditty has been with Lenape Solar since humble beginnings and a staff of three just two years ago, and her appointment to the position of president was a direct result of her lead role in propelling the company toward its current success & strength. Her impressive career in business management and the construction industry, most notably (and more recently) as the former Director of Marketing & Sales Training for the world-wide Kuhns Brothers Enterprises family of companies, has taken her across the country to California and back.
However, Ditty is now elated to be working in her hometown and at the helm of a company that, in her words, “has incredible potential for success, not only because the demand for viable alternative energy sources like solar power will continue to rise, but also because of the impressive dedication, knowledge and experience of the staff & crew. There’s the honest sense that we’re in this together ... doing valuable work, playing a part in protecting and sustaining our environment and making a difference in peoples’ lives.”
Lenape Solar specializes in residential & commercial Solar Thermal (hot water & radiant heating) and Photovoltaic (electricity generation) solar energy system installations, taking great pride in both their choice to utilize only the highest quality, American-made components in their systems, and in their ability to identify & obtain all available rebates, government programs or grants for their customers to ensure maximum affordability and the fastest return on the investment in a solar energy system. The company additionally offers energy efficiency solutions such as weatherization.

Lenape Solar Donates Solar Energy System For Charity Fundraiser
June, 2011 – Lenape Solar™ of Sunbury, along with their subsidiary company, Sunrise Solar Leasing, LLC, recently displayed their ardent support of Transitions (formerly known as Susquehanna Valley Women in Transition) at the organization’s largest fundraising event of the year, the Annual SVWIT Auction, by donating a 10-year lease on a full solar thermal water heating system valued at $11,000.00. Decidedly one of the most valuable items donated for the auction, which was held in June at Susquehanna University’s Degenstein Campus Center, the solar thermal system lease raised not only great interest in modern solar energy alternatives among the attendees, but also raised $2,600.00 for Transitions’ admirable work supporting and assisting victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault and other crimes.
After some heated but good-natured bidding, the system went to generous top-bidders David & Jean Haynes of Danville. Said Mrs. Haynes, “My husband and I are so excited about this. We have the perfect house for a solar energy system, and it’s the right thing to do.”
“It’s wonderful to be able to help, in our way, with such a worthy cause as Transitions,” says Lenape Solar Vice-President Justin Charles, “and it’s important that we all do our parts to not just protect our environment, but to protect and support our local communities and neighbors, too. Here, we were able to do both at the same time.”
The system donated to the Transitions fundraiser, and soon to be installed at the Haynes’ home, features Kingspan Thermo-Max™ solar thermal components. Kingspan is widely recognized in the solar energy field as the world’s leader in solar thermal (‘evacuated’) tube manufacturing, and their systems can be found across the country atop buildings that house IKEA, N.A.S.A. and the Social Security Administration, and even atop the Pentagon. Locally, Lenape Solar most recently installed a Kingspan Thermo-Max system at Steininger’s Laundromat of Selinsgrove, which is now (and proudly) the state’s largest solar-powered laundromat.
Transitions, now celebrating their 36th year of community service in Snyder, Union and Northumberland counties, is a crisis center that provides advocacy, empowerment and education to victims, survivors, families and communities to end patterns of violence and abuse. Their services are free and completely confidential for both child and adult survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and other serious crimes, regardless of age or gender, and include an emergency shelter, counseling, crisis intervention and legal advocacy.  Transitions also provides award-winning awareness and prevention education programs to schools and community groups.
