COMPANION
ANIMAL HOSPITAL
Selinsgrove, PASolar Thermal Hot Water & Space Heating Installation Companion Animal Hospital is a large, full-service veterinary clinic with an associated boarding kennel, Paws Inn. The veterinary clinic offers several examination rooms, a full surgical suite and boarding for their furry patients. Paws Inn offers boarding for dogs and cats, pet grooming and a retail store. Combined, the two businesses have a large daily domestic hot water need, and the facilities are heated by hot water boilers. The clinic and the Paws Inn retail store & grooming areas are hot-water baseboard heat, and the dog boarding kennel features radiant heat floors in both the indoor and outdoor areas. CAH & Paws Inn is a great place to take your pet, by the way.
A custom solar hot water system offereda unique opportunity to provide domestic hot water and the ability to significantly reduce their need for fossil fuel to heat the clinic and boarding kennel. Custom-designed and neatly installed, the Lenape Solar™ solar hot water system consists of 14 roof-mounted arrays, each with 30 evacuated tubes, generating a significant amount of heat during both sunny and partly cloudy conditions (and even with up to 4" of snow cover). Two heat exchangers, located in the basement, are used to transfer heat to two separate systems; one for domestic hot water, and the other for augmenting the building's hot water boilers. The first heat exchanger is used to heat 410 gallons of fresh water, stored in two large insulated tanks. For maximum efficiency, water in the tanks can be stored up to 190°(F). The water in the tanks is used directly for domestic hot water needs and is “tempered” prior to use by mixing it with cold water. The second heat exchanger is tied to the hot water boilers through the heating loop that is "zoned" and services the clinic, the retail store and the kennel. Increased heating efficiency of the boilers and reduced fuel consumption is ultimately achieved by taking heat from the storage tanks and pre-heating the boiler return water. The net result for Companion is that their boilers run much less often, and they burn significantly less fossil fuel. ![]()
Specifically designed to meet Companion's needs, domestic hot water production
with their systemalways takes precedence over augmenting the boilers. During periods of little or no sun to heat the arrays, and therefore the water in the storage tanks, a fail-safe was built into their system. When the tanks are at or above 130°, they can be used to pre-heat the boiler return water. Between 110° and 130° they are used for domestic hot water only. Below 110°, however, the system is shunted off and the original clinic hot water heater takes over until the arrays are again capable of heating the tank water. All of this is accomplished under the guidance of a system controller located next to the pump station. The bottom line is that this custom solar hot water system is capable of supplying all of the domestic hot water needs of Companion Animal Hospital and Paws Inn, and it significantly reduces their demand for fossil fuel through perfect integration with their existing hot water boilers. Lenape Solar™ made it happen. |
